Cree, PREFERMS investigatorsAbstractBackgroundSuboptimal persistence with injectable disease-modifying therapies (iDMTs; interferon beta-1a/b, glatiramer acetate) is common in patients with relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS), reducing the effectiveness of these agents. Adherence to, and persistence with, an effective therapy is important for patient populations at increased risk of rapid disease progression. African-American in…
ConclusionsRecurrent vaginitis should be taken into account as a possible adverse effect causing discomfort during long-term natalizumab treatment. Simple measures, such as probiotic administration and meticulous local hygiene, can provide adequate relief for such patients.
Publication date: Available online 20 July 2018Source: Multiple Sclerosis and Related DisordersAuthor(s): Gareth Pryce, David BakerAbstractSince their discovery, the existence of secreted oligoclonal immunoglobulin in the central nervous system in people with multiple sclerosis has been the subject of scientific investigation and debate over several decades. Although autoantibodies can be detected in some individuals, probably secondary to release of neo-antigens after damage, evidence for a major, primary involvement of damaging antibodies is still relatively lacking. However it is possible to construct a working hypothes…

ConclusionsPediatric demyelinating diseases in Brazil are similar to the diseases described abroad. In patients with pMS, the EDSS score at the first appointment and the total number of relapses were associated with poor prognosis. NMOSD is more severe than MS in pediatric patients. Treatment with DMD and azathioprine was well tolerated and effective in reducing relapse rate and disability.
