Atrial fibrillation creates an irregular heart rhythm called arrhythmia. A doctor can use physical examination and machine testing to diagnose and treat this common heart disorder. Read on to learn more.

Introduction: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is one of the most widespread arrhythmias in the world. The main cause of AF is structural heart disease and hypertension, which lead to the structural remodeling of atrial tissue. However, the symptom burden of AF does not correlate with degree of atrial remodeling. The initiation of AF starts from a source in the pulmonary veins (Haissaguerre et al 1998). The ablation of this source can suppress recurrent AF (Kirchhof et al 2016). This region of the pulmonary veins is the point of tight attachment of the connective tissue of the pericardium.

By this point, I think that most people have seen the big announcement coming out of the Apple event that the Apple Watch 4 now has ECG and other heart monitoring capabilities built in. The watch will notify you if your heart rate is too low and instances of atrial fibrillation that it detects. Plus, all of this is done as an FDA cleared device (some are reporting that Apple got their FDA clearance in 30 days which is crazy fast for a medical device).
The response to this announcement has been quite interesting. Most aren’t surprised that Apple has been moving more and more into healthcare. Plus, there have been a lo…

Abstract
INTRODUCTION: Mitral stenosis due to rheumatic heart disease is a common problem in India causing significant morbidity and mortality. We have compared the maternal and fetal outcome of women with severe mitral stenosis undergoing percutaneous balloon mitral valvotomy before or during pregnancy.
METHODS: A total of 24 women of severe rheumatic mitral stenosis who underwent balloon mitral valvotomy before pregnancy (14 women, group 1) or during pregnancy (10 women, group 2) were included in the retrospective descriptive analysis.
RESULTS: The mean age was 25.5±3.6 yrs in group 1 and 25.7&p…

This report will provide a contemporary review of the epidemiology, pathophysiology and management options for AF in this complex patient population.

Publication date: Available online 8 August 2018Source: Canadian Journal of CardiologyAuthor(s): Mikael Laredo, Victor Waldmann, Paul Khairy, Stanley NattelAbstractThe incidence of atrial fibrillation (AF), the most common sustained arrhythmia and a major public health burden, increases exponentially with age. However, mechanisms underlying this long-recognized association remain incompletely understood. Experimental and human studies have demonstrated the involvement of aging in several arrhythmogenic processes, including atrial electrical and structural remodeling, disturbed calcium homeostasis, and enhanced atrial ectop…

ConclusionsPV ablation guided by AI resulted feasible, achieving a high rate of isolated PVs, with a low complication rate, and allowed a high single-procedure arrhythmia-free survival at 14  months.

AbstractPurpose of reviewsIn this review, the challenges of managing cardiac arrhythmias and syncope in the setting of pregnancy will be discussed.Recent findingsArrhythmias in pregnancy are increasing, as diagnostic and therapeutic options have advanced and women are older at the time of gestation. Atrial fibrillation has become the most common arrhythmia in pregnancy. Inherited arrhythmia has become a more common entity, with advances in treatments and genetic testing, and require specialized treatments in pregnancy.SummaryThe majority of arrhythmias in pregnancy are benign. The potential risk of increased cardiac morbid…

AbstractData on cardiovascular disease, including arrhythmias, in Africa is limited. However, the burden of cardiovascular disease appears to be on the rise. Recent global data suggests an increase in atrial fibrillation rates despite declining rates of rheumatic heart disease. Atrial fibrillation is also associated with increased mortality in Africa. Current management with medical therapy is sub-optimal and ablation procedures, inaccessible. Atrial fibrillation is also an independent risk factor for death in patients with rheumatic heart disease. Sudden cardiac deaths from ventricular arrhythmias are under-recognized and…

There is a tough ongoing rivalry between drugs and catheters to conquer the commonest electrical chaos in human heart, namely Atrial fibrillation (AF). Mind you,the confusion about the importance of this arrhythmia is huge and real.Bulk of these episodes are transient , paroxysmal and do not require rigorous management. While stroke prevention seems to be the major aim and target , the real world scenario seems to tell  a different story.
The nomenclature conundrum
AF may be classified as many ways a learned cardiologists can think . Often it’s done with reference to etiology, duration , rate, neural (sympa…
