As most people know, obesity rates are on the rise. What most people do not know, is how much obesity is on the rise. According to statistics, obesity rates have quadrupled in the last forty years. The negative consequences of obesity make this statistic very disturbing! Fortunately, with proper education, the rising obesity trends can be reversed. Fighting obesity is as simple as changing our daily eating habits. To learn more, continue reading this article. Throughout the article we will define obesity, learn some of the consequences of obesity, and learn how we can begin to reverse the rising obesity trend.

Let’s begin by defining obesity. Obesity is a medical condition that occurs when an individual has too much excess body fat. An individual is generally considered obese if they are over 20% their ideal body weight. If you are looking on a Body Mass Index, anyone with a score between 25 and 29 is considered overweight, and anyone with a score over 29 is considered obese.

Obesity can not only lead to a variety of self esteem issues, but can also lead to a wide range of serious health complications. Obesity can increase an individual’s likelihood of developing heart disease, type two diabetes, breathing difficulties, cancer, and osteoarthritis. It is therefore extremely important that we begin to reverse the rising obesity trends that we are seeing within society today.

The first step to reversing the trends, is changing our daily eating habits. As a society, our eating habits have become very unhealthy in the last 40 years. Today’s fast paced lifestyle no longer consists of eating home cooked meals, but rather eating fast food and processed food for ‘meals on the run’. While these foods are convenient and help save time in our fast paced lives, they are destroying our health and increasing our obesity rates.

If we want to reverse obesity trends, we need to begin with a healthy diet plan. Those who are trying to lose weight should begin by including more fruits and vegetables within their diets. Fruits and vegetables are packed full of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and fiber. They are also extremely low in calories, allowing us to eat large portions without gaining weight. When it comes to meals, vegetables and fruits should play a large role and should be included in every meal. When making meals, aim to include a minimum of five portions of fruits and vegetables each day.

A healthy diet plan not only includes fruits and vegetables, but also includes a wide range of whole grain products. Whole grain foods are great for weight control because they are high in fiber. When a food is high in fiber, it fills our stomach up faster. This way, we consume less and stay fuller longer.

Because obesity leads to so many health issues, it is important that we begin educating people on the benefits of healthy eating habits. Begin your whole foods eating plan today and start changing the trends – one person at a time!
