If your body does not have adequate levels of iron, you can suffer from anemia. Anemia can be detected when hemoglobin is below normal levels in the body. Hemoglobin is very important for the body as it transports oxygen from the lungs to various parts of the body. When body does not have sufficient levels of iron, the result is problems such as fatigue and shortness of breath. These are some of the problems that can arise as a result of anemia. Anemia in its worst form can also affect the heart. In children, lack of iron can result in behavioral problems. Eating foods that do not provide iron or certain illnesses like thyroid deficiency can cause iron levels to drop, resulting in anemia.

In order to prevent anemia, it is necessary for the body to have adequate levels of iron. Adequate levels of iron are most important for teenagers and pregnant women. The level of iron required per day depends on age. A normal adult woman should have 65-165 micrograms/dL and for a normal adult man, the ideal level should be 75 to 175 micrograms/dL. In case of children, it should be 50 to 120 micrograms/dL. When it comes to babies, iron level should range from 100 to 250 micrograms/dl. Lack of iron causes significant health problems, it is vital for any person to have adequate levels of it so that they can perform their activities without mental and physical fatigue.

Maintaining adequate level of iron in the body requires a balanced diet. If you are someone on a vegetarian diet, you have to ensure that the food you opt contains adequate iron levels, as you would be missing out on iron from meats. The best source of iron is foods such as meat, eggs and other dairy products. There are many other sources of iron-rich foods and this includes green leafy vegetables, whole grain breads, cereals, raisins and molasses. A diet with lots of fiber content can bring down iron levels as such food reduces the body’s ability to absorb iron.

It is very important to have adequate levels of iron in the body since the body needs it to produce hemoglobin, which carries oxygen from lungs to body tissues. Knowing about adequate body iron levels is of utmost importance for maintaining good health as it contributes to normal brain activity, cellular respiration, normal breathing and in fact, for almost all body activities.
