What Is Your Diabetes Resolution for 2014?

The New Year brings with it hope for a better future, a chance to undo the mistakes we’ve done and rebuild on things we have always wanted to. This is true for all aspects of our lives including our health. What better way to start the New Year! Let’s make a resolution. The big ‘Q’ is how different would this resolution been from all the past ones that we’ve broken.

We now know that diabetes as a disease has reached epidemic proportions. The disease is more a lifestyle disorder than a disease per se. Why not make a diabetes resolution for 2014?

What would an ideal diabetes resolution for the New Year be?

It’s simple – monitor your blood sugar levels regularly, planning your meals, increase in physical activity, taking medication on a timely basis and getting regular check-up.

This New Year:

1. Make it a point to visit your doctor at least 2 to 4 times a years, even if you are feeling physically fit

2. Have a comprehensive foot examination done twice a year

3. Inform your doctor of all the medication’s you’ve been taking, including herbal pills and over-the-counter (OTC) medications.

4. Take all your medications on time, as per the doctor’s prescription. Do not hesitate to ask the doctor if you are confused or unsure about consuming any medication.

5. Stick to your schedule of periodic blood sugar assessment.

6. Understand the factors that influence your overall health- A1c, triglycerides, cholesterol, blood pressure and microalbumin.

7. Increase your level of physical activity. Moderate exercise can increase the fat burning process of the body thus turning your body into a fat burning machine. Even a simple activity such as walking in the building compound for 15 minutes could be a positive step towards improving your health.

8. Monitor what you eat. Are you eating fresh fruits, green leafy vegetables and whole grains? Have you reduced your fat intake? Now is the time! IF you have any doubts regarding the meal size or the foods that you should eat or avoid, ask a dietician.

9. Have an annual thorough eye examination. See to it that your eye specialist sends to your diabetes primary care doctor.

10. Visit your dentist at least twice in a year to check for tooth complications that could be caused as a result of diabetes.

11. Improve your knowledge regarding diabetes. Read books, participate in online forums, etc.

Also, follow these simple tips on a daily basis this year:

1. Check your feet for sores or cuts. If the wound takes longer than normal time to heal, visit your doctor.

2. Bathe with lukewarm water and a mild soap.

3. Do not forget to floss your teeth daily.

The more focussed you are on completing your resolve for diabetes care, the more confident and motivated you will feel.

This New Year let’s form a health habit and make a positive change in our lives.
