New Delhi: Hypertension or high blood pressure is popularly known as a silent killer, and rightly so as it develops without any prominent symptoms and becomes detrimental over time. High BP refers to the force at which blood crashes against the artery walls while circulating to various body parts. At first, it may seem normal; however, high blood pressure can damage artery walls over time resulting in chronic heart diseases.

Although hypertension can be controlled with medication, experts recommend switching to a low-salt, low-sodium diet along with limited consumption of refined sugars, saturated fats, and processed foods. Herbs and spices are often recommended as healthy staples for patients with high BP. Yet, there are some varieties that may do no good to hypertension patients.

Keep reading to know the worst spices that must be dodged as explained by Dr Amreen Shaikh, Consultant Dietician at Wockhardt Hospital. The expert, in interaction with Times Now Digital, explained that when it comes to hypertension, patients do not need to ignore spices. With this, the expert debunked popular myths around cinnamon intake for patients with high blood pressure.

“When it comes to hypertension patients, there is nothing specific to avoid except salt, amchur powder (dried masala powder), chaat masala, preserved and processed food, pickles, papads and ready to eat/ready to cook packaged food owing to their refined flour, sugar, and saturated fats content. High sodium content will increase the blood pressure in hypertensive patients and can cause cardiovascular events,” he said.

Blood pressure constitutes systolic and diastolic readings – while the former measures pressure in the arteries when the heartbeats, the latter measures the same when the heart is at rest. Here’s what your blood pressure reading means:

  1. Normal BP: Below 120/80 mmHg
  2. Elevated BP: 140/90 mmHg and above
  3. Hypertensive crisis or severe hypertension: Above 180/120 mmHg

How to treat hypertension naturally?

Besides this, Dr Shaikh shared a few tips for hypertension management.

  1. Avoid salted nuts and seeds
  2. Follow a DASH DIET
  3. (Dietary approaches to stop Hypertension)
  4. Include food rich in potassium, calcium, and magnesium
  5. Low saturated fats and sugars
  6. Include loads of fresh fruits and veggies in the diet
  7. Low-fat dairy products
  8. Whole grains and cereals
  9. Pulses and legumes
  10. Lean meats and fish and eggs
  11. Avoid frozen and canned foods
  12. Read Nutrition labels to choose low sodium food products.
  13. Avoid sweetened beverages
