New Delhi: According to a study published in the Journal of Dental Research titled “Novel Preosteoclast Populations in Obesity-Associated Periodontal Disease”, obesity can increase the risk of developing gum diseases. This is a consequence of the increased development of MDSC or myeloid-derived suppressor cells.
As reported by the University of Buffalo News Centre, Kyuhwan Kwack, PhD, postdoctoral associate in the UB Department of Oral Biology and an author of the study said, “This research promotes the concept that MDSC expansion during obesity to become osteoclasts during periodontitis is tied to increased alveolar bone destruction. Taken together, this data supports the view that obesity raises the risk of periodontal bone loss.”
Tips to manage obesity
Here is how you can keep a check on obesity:
- Reduce your consumption of sugary drinks and foods as they can add to weight gain.
- Consume a diet rich in fat, fibre, and protein to avoid the risk of overeating and uninvited hunger pangs.
- Lower your alcohol consumption as it can lead to weight gain.
- Avoid eating processed foods, fried foods, and red meat as they can contain an excessive amount of sugar, salt, fat, and other additives.
- Stay physically active and practise exercises to ensure a healthy weight and body. Experts recommend exercising at least 150 minutes every week.
Tips to take care of oral health
Here are some ways in which you can maintain oral health:
- Brush your teeth two times a day and do not forget to floss every day to prevent the risk of food getting stuck in your teeth and decaying.
- Avoid brushing your teeth immediately after having a meal as an acidic reaction can cause erosion of the enamel.
- Avoid excessive consumption of sugary items as it can put out the teeth at risk of cavities.
- Load your diet with calcium-rich foods such as spinach, broccoli, kale, milk, etc.
- Staying up to date with your dentist appointment is as important as other appointments. Make sure that you are getting your teeth checked up every month.
