Things You Can Do To Prevent Childhood Obesity

The truth is childhood obesity is on the rise, but there is something you can do about it. Obesity prevention does work. What is takes is parents being responsible for what their children do and eat. It might not be easy to make the transition from an unhealthy lifestyle into a healthy one, but it is well worth it, for the sake of your child.

One important piece to childhood obesity prevention is not using food as a reward. This can be harder than it sounds. When you take everyone in the family out for dinner as a treat, this is setting up a reward system. More dangerous is telling your child if they behave they will get candy or some other unhealthy snack. This sets up a negative relationship with your child and food.

What is the most difficult part of prevention is setting a good example. You have to choose to eat healthy foods and live a healthy lifestyle to show your children how important it is. When you set a good example it is easier for them to follow your lead. Granted, this is the hardest thing for a parent to follow, but it is the most important.

Get your child active. No doubt there is some sport or physical activity they are interested in. By getting them out and active they will naturally see improvement in their physical shape. Try a few different activities if they don’t like the first one, but keep going and make sure they have an active lifestyle.

A vital part of childhood obesity prevention is to limit television, video games, and computers. Kids are spending more time sitting in one place than running around outside. By limiting your children’s allowed time with electronics they will have to turn to other activities to keep them occupied.

Speak up when you see things that are unhealthy in your child’s life. If you see that the school is only serving unhealthy foods, say something. Demand changes for the health of your child. If the school won’t change then change what you do at home and stop purchasing school lunches. Encourage other parents to do the same thing. If you cut off a school’s money by no longer support their lunch program they will have to make changes.

Help your child to develop a positive self image. Be encouraging with things they are good at. Remind them every day that they are unique and wonderful. You are responsible for helping them to develop a healthy self-esteem. Most of this starts at home. Make sure that you are doing all you can as a parent to get them to be the best they can be.
